Learning bilingual dictionary search skills

Children in year four are learning the animals in Spanish. They have first learnt animal names that are cognates to animal names in English (very similar) and they then looked for non-cognates using English-Spanish dictionaries. They have not only found the translation of the animal names but also if they are masculine or feminine nouns.
Some cognates that they have learnt are: jirafa, leon, pinguino, zebra… and non-cognates such as perro, gato and pajaro.
