Spanish is a specialist subject taught by our full-time native Spanish teacher. It is taught from nursery to year 6 using a range of printed and audio-visual resources. In Key Stage 1, children record their learning by contributing to the creation of displays based on the topics learnt, which always links with the topics being learnt in that year group during the term. In Key Stage 2, children record their work in their Spanish books and also through group projects in years 5 and 6. The year 5 and 6 children have a Spanish Portfolio in which they self-assess their progress and which can be used in their application for a secondary school. All pupils also learn about the Spanish culture and way of life and identify similarities and differences with life and culture in the UK. There is also an after school Spanish Club which is attended by 20 year 5 pupils and that is also open to teachers. Sandringham’s Growth Mindset attributes are promoted during the Spanish lessons as well as one of the main school drivers, Oracy. All children are encouraged and supported to express themselves in Spanish and hold conversations with peers and adults.
Some of the skills covered during the Spanish lessons are:
Speaking and listening (paired and group conversations).
Writing (from year 3 onwards and occasionally in year 2)
Grammar, always linking and comparing with English grammar;
Turn taking, co-operation and peer support.
