Mary Poppins @ Theatre Royal Stratford East: A truly supercalifragilistic night to remember!
In July we saw the culmination of 9 months of rigorous rehearsing and hard work pay off in an unforgettable climax when Sandringham’s Musical Theatre Club put on Mary Poppins at the Theatre Royal Stratford East on Wednesday 16th. The show, which was the full-length film version, lasted 2 hours and was filled with familiar showstoppers which had the audience off their seats, singing and clapping along to songs such as Supercalifragilistic and Spoonful of Sugar.
The cast – made up of 21 children from across Years 4, 5 and 6 – were clothed in superbly tailored and professional costumes from Southend Theatrical Costumes Ltd. Their truly mesmerising performances, energetic dance routines and beautiful singing left many begging belief that they were not watching a theatre acting school performing and some audience members even went as far as to say that the show was comparable to West End productions they had been to see!
This performance was received by an extremely enthusiastic and supportive full-house which only made the performers rise even more to the occasion and supersede even the superb matinee performance earlier that day to an audience of Year 4 and 5 and 50 members of Sarah Bonnell’s performing arts group.
On a sadder note, this show marked the end of a wonderful era of talented, committed, loyal and hard-working students who have been an enormous part of musical life at Sandringham over the past 3 years. The likes of Sephora , Mishca , Fiza , Mandeep , Apria and Aagnesh have been an integral part of the school musical club since the Wizard of Oz in 2012. Their sparkle and natural talents in the performing arts alongside their discipline and commitment will be sadly missed. We can only wish them every success in the future and hope to be invited to watch them in future roles at their new schools. Who knows, we may even get to see some of them in the West End or one television one day!
There are many people who deserve thanks for making this production the best to date and even a whole newsletter would probably not suffice, but we would like to say thank you to all the staff at the Theatre Royal for making our experience there such a positive one with their welcoming and helpful attitude. Also, all the staff who chipped in by making last-minute props, selling tickets every afternoon in the playground, lending us personal items from home, organising for their classes to walk down to watch the matinee, taking photographs and lending a hand backstage or any which way. Without them, it just wouldn’t have been such a special and phenomenal evening. Thank you to all the parents for their support in encouraging their children to attend rehearsals and learn copious amounts of lines! Last but certainly not least, the amazing, awe-inspiring, talented, vivacious and dynamic young people who blessed us with arguably the best primary school production EVER! Without you there would be nothing. We love you all dearly. Xxx
